The Distance Between Us, Artifact 1

Ally Pompoco

A ten year old boy named Juan-Angle meets his siblings for the first time, in America. They were born in Texas and he was born in Guatemala and left by his parents when he was just one years old. When he discovered that all of his family lived in Texas, including his younger brother and sister he had never met, he made the 1,000 mile journey on foot to meet his family In America.

He was accompanied by a sixteen year old boy, they were abandon by a coyote early in the trip. They had to drink water from rivers to survive. They finally made it to a border checkpoint in lorado and ended up at a shelter in San Antinio. After a month he was finally released to the family he never knew. The article never said why his family left him in the first place. Thats something I would like to find out.

This relates to immigration because Juan-Angle and his companion came into the U.S. illegally. He has not been deported yet until he has a hearing. Our country does not think it is right to send out a boy without his family and no where to go. I think that this story relates to The Distance Between Us, because In the book Reyna, Margo and Carlos know what its like to be without parents just like Juan-Angle from the story. They know the pain of being alone and not having the love that a mother or father would have for their child.
