The Distance Between us Artifact 2

Fewer unaccompanied immigrant children are crossing the border from mexico to the U.S. each year, this has aloud temporary shelters on our side of the border to close. The Homeland Security has released information showing that about 5,500 unaccompanied children were arrested in July 2013 alone. There were barley half the number in May and June and the fewest children since Feburary. They welcomed the decline but the numbers over all are still higher from the previous years. They want the message to be clear that we do not allow illegal immigrants.
When temperatures rise, they say, children from Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador could be back in even greater numbers. There are more immigrants in the spring and summer because they don’t like to make the trip when it is cold. Its sad to see unaccompanied minors crossing the border because you know they have no one or nothing there.

This Relates to The Distance Between Us because both their mom and dad were illegal immigrants. They contributed to the number of people crossing over. A lot of people in Mexico are leaving to “El Otro Lado” to better themselves and their families, just like in the book. The American Dream means to live comfortably with money and a family. Thats what all the people that come into our country want. How could we blame them?

The Distance Between Us, Artifact 1

Ally Pompoco

A ten year old boy named Juan-Angle meets his siblings for the first time, in America. They were born in Texas and he was born in Guatemala and left by his parents when he was just one years old. When he discovered that all of his family lived in Texas, including his younger brother and sister he had never met, he made the 1,000 mile journey on foot to meet his family In America.

He was accompanied by a sixteen year old boy, they were abandon by a coyote early in the trip. They had to drink water from rivers to survive. They finally made it to a border checkpoint in lorado and ended up at a shelter in San Antinio. After a month he was finally released to the family he never knew. The article never said why his family left him in the first place. Thats something I would like to find out.

This relates to immigration because Juan-Angle and his companion came into the U.S. illegally. He has not been deported yet until he has a hearing. Our country does not think it is right to send out a boy without his family and no where to go. I think that this story relates to The Distance Between Us, because In the book Reyna, Margo and Carlos know what its like to be without parents just like Juan-Angle from the story. They know the pain of being alone and not having the love that a mother or father would have for their child.
